In “Mind Over Mass Media” by Steven Pinker, Pinker discusses the the idea of media and internet sites making the human race a less efficient and intelligent specie and dependable on the internet. In this article Pinker states one main point that tells why he believes society uses the internet to much. Pinker states, “Powerpoint, we’re told, is reducing discourse to bullet points. Search engines lower or intelligence, encouraging us to skim on the surface of knowledge rather than dive to its depths. Twitter is shrinking our attention spans” (560). By saying this Pinker is trying to show that with being so dependable on social media and the internet our race is becoming less efficient. Americans are relying on the internet to think, to act, to socialize, and to learn. This is not the only thing Pinker uses to support his claim. Pinker also says in his article, “language is the key to understanding the human mind” (559). By stating this Pinker is trying to say, with using social media all the time we are slowly no longer looking up when we walk through parks, town, malls, streets. As a society we aren’t looking up and seeing people's real faces and voices. Meeting people in real life, seeing a person not a screen. Pinker is trying to show the readers that Americans aren’t looking up they are looking down. Missing true human interaction; real laughter and seeing true smiles. All Americans are looking at now is a screen saying “haha” or “lol” trying to imply a laugh through letters on a screen. As a society we no longer have the language ability we use to because we no longer look up and talk to a person, instead Americans send a unpersonable text. Through the claims and evidence Steven Pinker gave, he is trying to show as a society we are becoming less knowledgeable about the human brain and personality because, we no longer socialize in person we only socialize through buttons on a screen.
