What Is A Brother
“Brother,” In the english language this one simple word can have such a complex meaning. One word had the capability of meaning multiple different meanings. The definition of the word “brother” according to the Webster dictionary is, “A man or boy in relation to other sons and daughters of his parents.” This might be the dictionary meaning but is not the only meaning. Being a brother is more than blood, he’s there, he’s loves, and he helps develop a fellowship with god.
Not only do soldiers get to serve our country, but also get to discover a bond tighter than most relationships. When the military are deployed, with the same men and women for many months, during that time the relationships grown is tighter than a friendship, it’s a brotherhood. For example, seal teams and units are examples of the brotherhoods. These are the brothers that never leave another soldier behind. There is no blood connection, all the connection is in the heart. The uniform is only the beginning of the relationship, it is only the foundation. The relationship makes the military, the men and women get asked all the time, “why do you do it?” by civilians. In the the 2001 film, and Mark Bowden novel, Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War in response to the question they stated, “They won’t understand. They won’t understand why we do it. They won’t understand it’s about the men next to you… and that’s it. That’s all it is.” When creating that kind of bond with someone, soldiers become closer than friends. Soldiers become family, those men and women become their chosen brothers and sisters. Although, this isn't the only other definition of the word.
Blood brothers isn’t just a brotherly bond among friends; it is sharing the same blood and genetics. This relationship is one where brothers never abandon one another no matter what happens and always take care of each other. Children at a young age don't understand the importance of the blood brother relationship. Personally, my brothers and I are best friends. We tell each other everything and hang out all the time. Blood brothers are chosen, children are just born with brothers and sisters. Some take this blessing in a happy way, meaning they embrace their brother and/or sister and become close and friends. However, sadly some take this in a less pleasing way and never become close to his or her brother or sister. Either way a blood brother is brother or sister that’s born into his or hers lives, not what an individual chooses. Then there is the brotherhood in christ.
Finally, a brotherhood through Christ is the relationship Christians have built around faith. This is a brother, Christians allow in their life on a Christian based friendship. These are the men in women that follow Jesus Christ and are living their lives in the same way as other Christians. For example, it could be a friend in the church or at a religion based school. These are the Christians that will help other Christians get through the curveballs life throws. They help other Christians deal with situations through Christ, and believe Christ knows the path. This kind of brotherhood helps Christians keep the relationship with not only them but Christ as well. When Christians are lost they help other Christians pray to find it again.
The english language is the toughest language to learn, because individual words can have many meanings. For example, like I previously stated, the word brotherhood can mean multiple things. Brotherhood could mean a military brotherhood, blood brother, or even a brother in Christ. Look deeper into each word, because words that sound simple could have a deeper meaning.
