Use of Laptops in Class
Today students have become more technologically advance. Society has become a self sufficient generation and has reached accomplishments that weren’t even thought of fifteen, ten, or five years ago. The human race, with the power of the internet, can look up every document, paper, article, news cast, social media, history event, and or fact. With this ingenuity comes responsibility and maturity needed to handle such power. There are obstacles professors face in their classrooms with students and today’s technology. Darren Rosenblum talks about the the disengagement he feels from the students as well as the distractions he believes laptops create. However, the article, “Leave Your Laptops at the Door to My Classroom” by Professor Rosenblum accurately points out disadvantages; It also leaves out the advantages laptops in the classroom brings to improving learning.
There are disadvantages to using the technology the human race has created everyday and all the time. Technological advances are increasing in today’s world rapidly. Today’s society uses technology more today than ever before. Rosenblum claims laptops are becoming a distraction. For example he states, “Observing a senior colleague’s contracts class, I spied one student shopping for half the class” (Rosenblum par. 1). Rosenblum talks about how using the laptops affects the student's social skills because the students no longer talk, all they do is use the technology like the following: laptops, iphones, and ipads. He also pointed out during the article that using laptops is causing the students to lose skills needed later in life and in the career field. Like the following, students are losing how to articulate proper sentences because they no longer have to talk they can send a “text” or “Email.” Finally with today’s internet it is all about how fast people can find something. With doing that it causes the students attention spans to decrease because they are being easily distracted with the many options on the internet.
While explaining the disadvantages during his article Rosenblum points out ways students can change to make it better and to allow a healthier learning environment. For example, Rosenblum states, “Students process information better when they take notes” (Rosenblum par. 6). By saying this in his article he is trying to show when students slow down and write out notes they improve their understanding of the information. Students who take the time to write out their notes and focus on the words they are writing they retain the information better. It allows the brain to process the information rather than trying to get down as much as possible without learning what the student is typing. When taking notes on a laptop the students are multitasking, they are staring at the board while typing the words they see. In doing that the students aren’t really taking in what they are typing. slowing down makes students truly read what they are writing.
When using the technology during classes to do work decreases the social environment and makes students lack certain skills needed. Rosenblum states, “Students need two skills to succeed as lawyers and as professionals: listening and communicating”(Rosenblum par. 3). I agree with this statement, but I also think using the laptops and the technological advances in moderation can improve our skills. I think other professions needs Students to acquire these skills as well. I think the laptops can provide a more efficient way to look up information and assist in completing homework assignments. If students can provide there own devices or the school can, I think they should be welcome. However, I do believe there are times when the laptops should be put away and students have a classroom assignment to create controversial conversation to work on social skills.
Darren Rosenblum did a accurate job at showing advantages and disadvantages of using technology in the classroom. In the article, “Leave Your Laptops at the Door to My Classroom,” Rosenblum stated his personal obstacles he faced when teaching a classroom accepting of laptops. He also gave facts and reasoning as to why he believed what he did. Rosenblum wants to see the students succeed and has banned laptops to help better the students learning environment. Hearing this new information take into consideration if using the laptop is the most viable option.
