In Why and When We Speak Spanish In Public, Myriam Marquez developes an effect then three ways to explain it and then tries to persuade the readers to see her view. She begins with a effect which is speaking spanish, then explains why in three reasons. First, in paragraph four Marquez explains one reasoning behind speaking is for the respect of their family culture and roots. Marquez’s second reasoning is in paragraph seven, where she explains how America is a free country and was careful not to promote a official language so therefore she has the right to speak spanish. Third of all Marquez makes the point she shouldn’t have to be ashamed of who she is and the culture and and where her and her family comes from. To explain reasonings two and three she points out, “Pennsylvania even provided voting ballots written in Germany during much of the 1800s for those who weren’t fluent in English” (507). This quote was relevant because it shows that this is a free country, and she has the right to to speak spanish; at one point the United States offered the option of another language on a government mandated ballot. As well as showing Marquez that she shouldn’t be ashamed of her heritage because the germans weren’t. Marquez points out very strategically with the small rhetorical question of, “you know whats rude?” (507), implying that Americans believe Hispanic-Americans are rude when in fact she is trying to say they are not, and trying to get Americans to understand it from her side. In addition, Marquez provides the significance of the topic on page 507. Marquez states, “throughout this nation’s history, most immigrants-- whether from Poland or Finland or Italy or whatever else-- kept their language through the first generation and, often, the second.” By saying this Marquez is trying to convey a feeling of empathy. She is pointing out the other races that are less ridiculed by the american people, and to show if it is okay for them then why is it not for the spanish speaking americans? Why is more rude for the Hispanic-Americans to speak their language rather than other races? She is trying to say, her family is speaking in spanish to respect their heritage and keep their culture, not to disrespect the American people. Through the actions and reasonings Myriam Marquez gave, she is trying to show her family and/or others speaking spanish is not in disrespect but in fact just respecting her culture.
